The collection features papers documenting Ferry's service as Dean of Williams College, his career as a professor and mathematician, and his days as a student and traveler. Records of the Dean's Office include correspondence, printed material and reports regarding such issues as entrance requirements, the curriculum and student discipline. Ferry's activities as a teacher and mathematician are reflected in correspondence, gradebooks, speeches and other materials. His youth is described in such papers as diaries and school exercises from his years in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and at Williams College. Personal papers include correspondence, journals and collected materials regarding Ferry's continued involvement with his Williams College Class, and trips he made to Norway, Europe and through New England. Also included is correspondence with various Williams College presidents during Ferry's tenure as President of Hamilton College.

Frederick Carlos Ferry (1868-1956) was born in Braintree, Vt., and graduated from Williams College in 1891. He served as Latin, Greek and mathematics instructor at the College from 1891 to 1894 before receiving an M.A. from Harvard University and a Ph. D. from Clark University. Ferry returned to Williams in 1899 to teach mathematics. Beginning in 1902, he also served as the College's Dean. He left Williams in 1917 to become President of Hamilton College.
